York Middle School Girls Soccer is open to 7th and 8th grade girls, with 6th graders joining some years when necessary. The team plays a 9-10 game interscholastic schedule against schools in Southern Maine. Our season runs for seven weeks, from the beginning of September to the end of October. ANY PLAYER TRYING OUT MUST HAVE AN UPDATED (WITHIN THE LAST YEAR) PHYSICAL ON RECORD WITH THE SCHOOL NURSE!
General Team Expectations:
It is expected that every member of the team will make a full commitment to the team. By participating in Girls Soccer, this must be the student-athlete’s main commitment as an after school activity. The members of the team must be at every practice and every game, with certain exceptions allowed. They must arrive at practice and games on time and be prepared to play. It is my intention to give every member of the team valuable and important playing time during the games. Absences from practices and games will result in a reduced amount of playing time.
It is also expected that each player will come to training sessions ready to listen and learn. It is expected that each member of the team gives me and each other 100% of their undivided attention. It is critical that every player understands what I am teaching.
Another expectation is that each athlete will come to practices and games ready to give their best effort.
Girls will maintain in good academic standing. They will be doing weekly check ins with their teachers to hand in to me. I am a strong believer that academics come first.
All team members are expected to abide by school and bus rules. As a representative of York Middle School, our expectations for proper behavior are higher than for the non-athlete. Misbehavior in school and on the bus to and from games will result in reduced playing time.
When we are watching the other teams play we have the girls sit with each other and not run around. It can be very distracting having 13-14 girls running around, so out of respect we have them together.
From these basic expectations, I will determine field positions and playing time.
Practice Times and Location:
We will practice at the Village Elementary School field. We will train from 2:30pm until 4:00pm. All soccer players will walk together as one big group up to the VES field. The police officer at the corner of Organug and York Streets will stay until the teams have crossed the road. Please try to arrive as close to 4 as possible for pick up. Feel free to contact us if you need help with rides. Girls are not allowed to walk home from practice without permission.
Game Times and Locations:
Our home games will be held at VES. When the girls teams play together, 7th grade play first so they will start at 3:30/4:00. The second game starts immediately after the completion of the first game (usually around 4:30/5:00.) When the 7th grade plays with the 7th Grade Boys Team they play second at 4:30-5:30 (usually). The bus leaves right after school for away games. Girls who wish to leave with an adult after games must have a signed note from their parents. Girls are encouraged to bring snacks/water/homework on trips to away games! Also, players are not allowed to arrive to games with parents. They have to ride up on the bus with the team. Certain exceptions may apply but make sure to tell the coaches or Mr. Luttrell.
Equipment Requirements:
All players are expected to supply their own soccer shoes, socks and shin pads. Mouth guards are mandatory! Players with eye glasses are encouraged to get prescription athletic glasses (consult your eye doctor). They at least must have a strap to keep the glasses from falling off. The players will get a uniform jersey and shorts. Players do not need to bring a soccer ball, they will be supplied. Players are expected to bring their own water. There will not be any common source water supplied. We suggest that each player keep a water bottle in their locker and fill it up when they come to the field.
Cancellation of Practice or Games:
If a practice or game is cancelled, an announcement will be made and students are encouraged to call parents. We will also write e-mails updating everyone as certain situations come up. To go along with writing an e-mail I will update this website about any cancellations of events.
Last thing is that we will have an end of the year get together after our last game. More information to come!
